The “Sardar” finally shows his grit!

The Sardar (don’t get me wrong; I mean the leader of the country) is on the right footing against the unreasonable Left. He has decided to show his grit, albeit at the end of the Congress term. As predicted by most political analyst, the Congress has decided to take on the Left this time around cause the stakes are not too high -- the elections are already due next year, and the worst that can happen is Nov-Dec polls.

I am glad PM Manmohan Singh is not bending backwards (like he did last year; see my earlier blog dated October 2007) despite fierce objections from the communists who prop up his government in the Parliament. It seems the PM wants to move forward on the deal before the G8 summit on July 7 when he meets President Bush.

I do not want to get into the technicalities of the deal. It has been done to death by the newspapers. This write-up is to celebrate the grit of our PM.

The PM has done nothing during the last 4 years (may be the RTI). He has been crazily pushing for a deal as if it would solve all our problems. A year ago bloomberg reported that about $ 28 B of power projects were stuck because the Govt was unable to organise land for these projects. The point is, what strategic objective do we wish to meet? If it is about power, even the best Govt estimates put the conntribution of nuclear power to about 5%. So what effort is the Govt putting on generate the rest 95%? The answer is --Nothing!!. Inspite of the real growth (growth + inflation) exceeding 15% during the last 4-5 years, power generation growth has not exceeded 8%. Surely, this cannot be blamed on the coalition. The same holds true for strategy. This deal is meant to put us into some sort of orbit like the Japanese. What is wrong with us? we donot have confidence in being independent? Our vote against Iran, whatever its merits was not something we chose to, we buckled under US pressure. Lastly, why is it that the nuclear deal we are getting is worse than what the Chinese got? Are we willing to be an inferior nation? Can't we be stubborn and confident enough to hold out for a better deal? Afterall it took the Chinese more than 10 years to implement the nuclear deal. Why are we in such a rush? Why are we making the deal so people dependent (El baredei, Bush etc etc). The deal signifies what is wrong with India. We have moved from one extreme madness (blind hatred of the US) to the other (US can do no wrong). I hope we are able to evaluate this issue dispassionately.
